Research Profile
Philip is a former design executive of Telstar Entertainment Group, Granada Media and Design Bridge where he was responsible for the development of interactive entertainment and marketing communications for a number of key clients and projects. He led the team responsible for the development of official websites for Citroen UK, Universal Music UK, Silk Cut Sailing, Coronation Street, Emmerdale, This Morning and Popstars amongst many others.
Philip has a background in graphic design, interactive media and branding and been involved in a number of business start-ups and dotcom ventures, including brand development and audience research for Global Music Network, Internet service provider G-WIZZ and a number of fast-moving consumer goods.
Trained as a graphic designer, he spent six months in Dutch graphic design masters, Total Design in Amsterdam where he was engaged on a number of corporate identity and form-design projects for the Council of Europe, SZW and Randon Employment Bureau.
More recently he established design and innovation company 'Novari Limited' (http://www.novaridesign.com) where he is Chief Innovator & Managing Director.
He designed and published an ethnographic tool 'ethnoview' [Ely (2005) 'Home Entertainment – Episode 1' www.home-ent.com] in 2005/6.
Philip is currently engaged in his PhD study 'The Problem of digital-DIY: Configuration and Reconfiguration of Domestic Entertainment, Information & Communication Technologies During Life-Change' at the Digital Worlds Research Centre at the University of Surrey. The project is exploring how householders engage in so-called 'digital-DIY' activity during life-change, an activity thwart with problems and trials in a complex ecology of digital technologies, manuals, neighbours, friends and wires.
He is the Lead Academic for the cross-campus, interdisciplinary Home Interaction Research Cluster at UCA.
