MA Ethical Fashion
1 year full-time, 2 years part-time at UCA Epsom

This course enables you to develop an understanding of ethical and environmental practice both in the fashion industry and as a driver for socio-economic development. Through the exploration of current and future models of the  implementation of ethical practice and the evolution of your own fashion related practice, you are able to address the implications of and considerations for contemporary fashion practice.

Your project work may be concerned with specific ethical issues within fashion, either within the mainstream industry or within smaller scale or alternative production models. Areas of study may include:

•  Sweatshop labour and supply chain ethics
•  Models for the management of corporate socially responsible practice
• The relationship of design and fashion to socio-economic development
• Ecology in textiles sourcing and production
• Global and local production and the ethics of fast fashion
• Sustainable design strategies.

Stage 1
Examine the main areas related to ethical issues within fashion, looking at current strategies relating to small scale production and ethics within the corporate fashion industry responsible for high volume production.

Stage 2
Individual research projects build on personal interests and the skills that you have developed through prior study and /or professional experience.

Stage 3
Create a final major project that builds on the interests developed throughout the course to express specific areas of ethical fashion. Final outcomes are tailored to each student.

How this course is taught
You are taught through a range of lectures, seminars, tutorials and workshops. There is a strong emphasis on independent research.

How this course is assessed
You are assessed on evidence of your knowledge, understanding through application of ideas, research and methodological structure and your technical and applied skills.
