BA (Hons) Leisure Journalism
3 years full-time at UCA Farnham
What are you into? Surfing? Mountain biking? Sailing? Angling? Gadgets? Hi-fi? Diving? Skiing? Extreme sports?
Now you can pursue your passion and write about it with the BA (Hons) Leisure Journalism - a brand new journalism degree course that launches in September 2009.
This new specialist journalism course is unique: it is the only undergraduate degree in leisure journalism in the UK. This is a multimedia degree and particularly targets the growing leisure magazine sector and the many websites that serve the audiences for specialist sports, hobbies, leisure interests and active pursuits.
This new specialist leisure journalism degree is taught alongside the BA (Hons) Journalism within the successful journalism department at Farnham – launched in 1992, one of the longest-established journalism schools in the UK.
The latest National Student Satisfaction survey (published September 2008) shows the Farnham BA (Hons) Journalism degree to have 96% student satisfaction – making us the joint top journalism course in the country!
The National Student Satisfaction survey also shows Farnham's journalism courses to have one of the best employability ratings of all media courses or journalism degrees: 90% of UCA journalism graduates are in employment or in further study six months after graduating.
The new BA (Hons) Leisure Journalism is taught as part of a cluster with the related specialist journalism courses, the BA (Hons) Sports Journalism and the BA (Hons) Motoring Journalism. All of these journalism courses offer you practical, high-tech production training across all four media – print, online, radio and television. This strength in production improves your chances in the fierce competition for journalism jobs when you graduate.
The BA (Hons) Leisure Journalism allows you to mix your media specialties in any combination. This unique journalism course allows you to combine in-depth magazine journalism training with specialist training in web journalism; but you can add broadcast components as well. The degree structure is extremely flexible.
We have excellent industry links. Work placements are built in to all our journalism courses. Recent placements include Arena magazine, Ace, Boxing News, Mojo, NME, The Times, The Independent, BBC TV's Watchdog and BBC regional radio; and journalism work for local papers such as the Surrey Advertiser, Farnham Herald series and Slough Express, and local radio stations such as Eagle FM, Fox FM and LBC in London.
We are in talks with one of the leading publishers of specialist consumer magazines and related websites to ensure a continuing range of high quality work experience and expert specialist teaching from this sector.
UCA's new degrees in leisure motoring, sports journalism and motoring journalism include classes that look at the social context and history of sports, pastimes and active pursuits and the workings of the specialist media that serve these audiences. To ensure that you meet industry requirements, there is training in media law.
You will be taught by experienced journalists and industry professionals. Our journalism teachers have worked on major websites; at the BBC, ITN and ITV Sport; in local radio and specialist stations such as TalkSport; at national newspapers including The Sunday Times, The Daily Telegraph and The Observer and on a wide range of magazines, from Autocar to Yachting Life.
Farnham in Surrey is ideally located for a student with an active lifestyle. Within an hour travel time there is walking in the South Downs or the Chilterns; world class sailing on the Solent; surfing at the Witterings near Chichester; cycling and camping in the New Forest; and ready access to all the facilities of London.
