18 June 2008
Following a string of successes including a BAFTA nomination, Will Cloke-McGregor, Digital Screen Arts student at the University for the Creative Arts at Farnham, is preparing to film a 12 minute short film about a Slovenian folklore water sprite.
Who's Afraid of the Water Sprite will be filmed on location in the Slovenian countryside and has set a wave of excitement in Slovenia leading to A ATALANTA, a local production company offering to sponsor the project with free use of an on site production crew and equipment on location in Slovenia.
A production team will fly out to Slovenia to shoot the film on 20 July.
The films producer is Slovenian born Manca Gale, who completed a Foundation Art course this spring and is set to begin a BA in Photography at Farnham.
The film's production team include fellow Digital Screen Arts (Hons) students Iain Whitewright and Sam Heasman, Poppy Solaris - BA Photography, (Hons) Karl Clarke - BA Film Production (Hons) and Emily Wells - BA Journalism (Hons).
TV and film makeup artist Helen Surer will link up with Will and the production film crew to the Slovenia shoot to help bring the water sprite character to life.
Will has been very busy in the build up to filming and he is enjoying every minute. He explained, "There isn't a single element of filmmaking I don't enjoy, I love the organizational side, the fund raising and producing elements, as well as the story writing film making is the ultimate medium. It tests you as a businessman, salesman and as a person."
Since beginning his Digital Screen Arts course at Farnham, Will says his film making has benefited significantly. "The staff are supportive and the other students are inspirational, both to work with and in terms of seeing what your fellow students are producing. For me it's all about being happy in an environment, as I find that creativity is affected by my surroundings. Studying at UCA Farnham is a great place to learn and develop."
Leah Gordon, Sessional practice tutor on BA hons Digital Screen Arts, said, "Will pushes himself very hard to produce work that is intelligent, graceful and engaging."
Will hopes to showcase Who's Afraid of the Water Sprite next year at locations such as Edinburgh, Berlin, London, and Cannes.
