3 years full-time at UCA Farnham

The Journalism course at Farnham is one of the longest-established Journalism degrees in the UK. The latest National Student Satisfaction survey (published September 2008) shows the Farnham Journalism degree to have 96% student satisfaction – making us the joint top Journalism course in the country!

The National Student Satisfaction survey also shows Farnham's Journalism course to have one of the best employability ratings of all media courses or Journalism degrees: 90% of UCA Journalism graduates are in employment or in further study six months after graduating.

Farnham Journalism graduates are to be found in all sorts of jobs in magazines, newspapers, radio, television, online media, public relations and communications. Some of our graduates are freelance journalists or are running their own media businesses.

Farnham's Journalism course is a unique multimedia degree. You can specialize in any two of print, online, radio or television journalism – any two specialties from the four, in any combination.

The Journalism course at UCA is BJTC-accredited. The BJTC – the Broadcast Journalism Training Council – is the media industry lead training body for radio journalism, television journalism, online journalism and multimedia journalism.

To maximize your employability, UCA's Journalism course includes training in media law, training in Teeline shorthand and training in the practicalities of politics and government.

You will be taught by experienced journalists and industry specialists. Our journalism teachers have worked at the BBC, ITN, international TV stations like CNBC, on network current affairs shows, in local radio, at major newspapers including The Sunday Times, The Daily Telegraph and The Observer and on a wide range of magazines, from Nursing Standard to Autocar. We train to very high standards of technical and production excellence – we know, because the employers tell us so!

Although the UCA Journalism course is a vocational Journalism degree, it is also academically strong and respected. Your studies will include modern British history, popular culture, landmarks in journalism, and critical approaches to journalism and the media. This gives the degree broad educational value and makes it good preparation for a range of careers.

We have excellent media industry links and work placements are built in to the course. At the moment we have students on regular placement with Eagle FM and CountySound radio in Guildford and recent placements include Mojo, NME, The Independent, Sky Sport, More, Mother & Baby, Boxing News, LBC, Somethin' Else Productions, Pier Productions, Radio Netherlands International, BBC radio and BBC television.

Last year, one of our students spent a month working with Canadian Broadcasting Corporation in Toronto; this year, another of our students has had two placements at Russia Today in Moscow. One of our second year students is currently working part-time at BBC Newsnight, following a successful placement.

Recently, two of our first year students were shortlisted in the national Press Gazette Awards – the only first years of any Journalism course in the country to be nominated for awards.
