AHRC The Arts and Humanities Research Council offers some postgraduate professional and vocational awards. In order to apply for an AHRC studentship you must have first secured a place on the post-graduate course for which you are seeking funding, so you should need to apply for admission earlier than normal.. Professional and Career Development Loans
A Professional and Career Development Loan is a bank loan. You make an agreement with a participating bank (Barclays or Coop) to borrow an amount between £300 and £10,000. Then once you've stopped studying, you pay it back in the normal way. The Learning & Skills Council pays the interest on the loan while you're studying

Creative Choices  This resource from Creative & Cultural Skills, the Sector Skills Council for Advertising, Crafts, Cultural Heritage, Design, Literature, Music, Performing, and Visual Arts, includes an education funding search database. Registration is free.

Educational Grants Advisory Service (EGAS)
EGAS provides information and advice on funding for education and training.They are able to help:

  • Individuals who wish to enter post-16 education or training who are resident in the UK
  • Residents of the European Economic Area (EEA) studying in the UK

International students (non-EU)

If you live outside the UK you may be able to apply for a bursary from your government, or a low interest loan, to study abroad. State or private-sector employers may also offer financial support if your MA would bring you professional or vocational advancement. International students are recommended to contact their local or national offices of the British Council to ask about potential sources of financial assistance during their study at the Institute.

The Universities UK administers the Overseas Research Students Award Scheme on a competitive basis to overseas postgraduate students of outstanding merit and research potential. The University subscribes to UKCOSA – The Council for International Education, which is an impartial and independent advisory service on all matters relating to studying in Britain.

Awards & Bursaries

UCA Student Finance  Information about Student Loans, bursaries and charitable trusts and can give details of the Access to Learning Fund (ALF) for students experiencing severe financial difficulties.

UCA Postgraduate Scholarships  The University is able to offer a small number of bursaries for postgraduate students, including the Sir Ray Tindle (Guardian Media Group) bursary for journalism research students. These can only be used as a contribution to the fees or as support for living costs. Support for living costs is only given if the full fees have already been paid. Details of the bursaries and the criteria for their award are sent to all applicants offered a place on a postgraduate programme.

Outside Organisations

Fulbright Commission
Awards include Fulbright Postgraduate Awards, Fulbright Co-sponsored MBA Awards. Candidates must be EU Citizens, ordinarily resident in the UK. For further information visit the Fulbright website.

British Council Grants to Artists
Many artists receive firm invitations to exhibit overseas only to discover that the ancillary costs of packing, insurance and transport are not covered by the host organisation. The British Council Grants to Artists scheme was set up to provide a contribution to help address this problem, at least in part. Application deadlines are 1st February, 1st May, 1st August and 1st November each year. Application forms are available online.
