Dr Jean Wainwright

Area of Research Expertise

My specialist area is Andy Warhol and contemporary photography/ film and video.

Research Profile

I have published extensively in this field as well as appearing on television and radio programmes (including the Today Programme, Channel Four, BBC and Open University) with specific reference to Warhol.  I am currently writing a book on Art and Fame for IB Tauris which is due to be published early next year. My practice as an art critic most prominently features interviews with international artists, curators, photographers and filmmakers. I have in this capacity published numerous 'conversations' for Audio Arts Magazine (published on CD). The Tate Gallery have just acquired the entire unedited archive of the 'magazine' including ten years of my interviews and a Phaidon book will be published next year on the project.  Both my PhD and current practice has a strong leaning towards the 'voice' as portraiture. My doctoral thesis explores a previously undocumented archive of Andy Warhol's audio tapes stored in Pittsburgh.

I worked in the commercial art world in the early eighties, set up Chelsea Crafts Fair with Philippa Powell and ran commercial gallery for two years. Most recently in  2005 I worked on two major projects for BT (Global) which resulted in a different way of them exploring collaboration between artists and developing technology.  BT commissioned me to write and edit two specialist books publications which highlighted the fusion between technological innovation and Montserrat Soto and Langlands and Bell's artistic vision. I am currently a .6 lecturer in Cultural Studies.
