Olympia

Olympia at the Herbert Read Gallery, UCA Canterbury

3-17 December 2010 and
10-14 January 2011
Herbert Read Gallery, UCA Canterbury

The Creative Campus Initiative Exhibition
Andrew Kotting and Iain Sinclair with support from Robert Bernard and Anonymous Bosch, Zadoc Nava, Rebecca Andrews, Breath/Breathe (a project initiated by Claire Barwell)

Severe Weather Notice

Please note that due to the adverse weather conditions, the private view scheduled for Thursday 2 December 2010 has been postponed.

Throughout the last academic year, the Creative Campus Initiative has been working with a combination of staff, students and widening participation teams to respond to the Cultural Olympiad and the London 2012 Games.

Olympia, the exhibition, is the culmination of this programme of activity and, through a range of media, brings together a diverse set of responses to the Olympic and Paralympic Games. Together the works show the myriad possible ways of understanding, celebrating and examining individual sports, sports people and the spectacle of the Games as well as the impact of London 2012.

The exhibition will present the commission 'Olympia' by Zadoc Nava, a photographic series focusing on Olympic hopeful female boxers. Nava's project is officially recognised as part of the London 2012 Inspire Programme.

Andrew Kotting's 'Swandown', also features an Olympia of its own; one of a series of swan decoys taken on walks across the South-East as part of his mapping project. Both of these works are accompanied by responses from students, Rebecca Andrews, Robert Bernard and Anonymous Bosch which address the concerns of the respective projects and take them in new directions.

Olympia and the Creative Campus Initiative programme has been curated by Rose Lejeune and directed by Dr. Seymour Roworth-Stokes

The Creative Campus Initiative is recognised by the London 2012 Inspire programme and seeks to develop a dynamic programme of high quality cultural events and activities leading up to the London Olympic and Paralympic Games in 2012.

Reflecting the distinctive strength of the arts and creative practice in South East higher education, the unique programme, involving 13 universities, connects the arts and sports in innovative ways, taking the value of education, research and the arts beyond the campus.
