New Works by Elaine Thomas
4 December 2013 - 21 March 2014
This exhibition of new works by Elaine Thomas has been staged to mark the official re-opening of the University's Library, which we have proudly renamed The Elaine Thomas Library. Professor Elaine Thomas CBE was Vice-Chancellor of UCA between 2000 and 2011. It is with great pleasure that we welcome Elaine back to UCA, as an artist, to present a display of her most recent paintings.
A fine artist by training, following retirement, Elaine took the opportunity to return to her creative practice full time, combining intensive work periods with visits to India and Europe, (particularly Italy), where she has found inspiration from a range of sources. Elaine's practice is strongly influenced by Medieval and Romanesque art as well as Ancient Greek, Roman and Indian art. In her paintings, Elaine uses acrylic and watercolour on paper and seeks to recreate the effects of ancient frescoes; their surfaces and layers which hide and reveal images and meaning. Her figures' posture and pose, intermingle and interact and, at times, evoke a sense of the biblical, the mythological and the pagan. The titles of these works seek to provide some clues as to their 'meaning' but viewers can also bring their own interpretations of the narratives to the works.
These paintings and other new works will be included in two forthcoming solo exhibitions at According to McGee, York (3 May to 2 June 2014) and Link Gallery, University of Winchester, (15 September to 20 October 2014).
