Style icon and pop star Lady Gaga has bought a cape and borrowed a dress from a graduate of UCA Rochester.

Lady Gaga wore the cape at an HMV launch on 8 September Style icon and pop star Lady Gaga has bought a cape and borrowed a dress from a graduate of UCA Rochester.

The pop diva, known best for her hit singles Just Dance and Poker Face spotted the designs of 27 year-old BA Fashion Design graduate Raffaele Ascione while visiting a stylist in London.

She wore the cape immediately to a launch event at HMV's Oxford Circus flagship store earlier this month.

Lady Gaga's debut single Just Dance was nominated for a Grammy, and has now sold more than 700,000 copies. Its successor Poker Face is the biggest single of the year so far climbing to the top of the UK single charts on March 22, it has sold in excess of 750,000 copies to date.

The singer swooped to bag Raffaele's cape and borrowed a dress on a visit to Anna Trevelyan, a friend of Raffaele who works as a stylist for the fashion magazine Dazed and Confused.

After buying the cape and borrowing the dress, Lady Gaga has requested to meet with Raffaele later in the year to work together with her stylist to make her more clothes in the future.

Raffaele said: "I feel quite honoured to be chosen and considered for Lady Gaga´s wardrobe and styling. I Rafaelle Ascione gradauted in 2008 from UCA Rochester didn't have her in mind when I made this but the jackets and capes I design are very theatrical. I'm really pleased she's bought it as it great exposure for me as a designer."

The cape bought by Lady Gaga is made from a combination of lurex polyester sheeting, with silk duchesse for the main part of the cape and Ottoman silk for the trim.

Raffaele added: "The cape was inspired by my grandmother and also carries a little secret, there are buttons trapped within the fabrics which my grandmother used to collect. It creates a little sound while walking that reminds me of her.

"I work with a process called "emotional designing" inspired by my memories, feelings, struggles and emotions. I work around some quite sinister sounding topics, such as nightmares, illness and confusion. I guess I am inspired by people, their lives, beauty, personalities and feelings."

Raffaele recently completed a year-long placement working in Milan for design chain Max Mara. In October he will begin an MA in fashion at Central Saint Martins College of Art and Design.

Raffaele represented UCA Rochester at Graduate Fashion Week in 2008, with items from his ten piece collection featured on the front cover of the GFW magazine. Alongside his work at Max Mara, he has also designed a four piece 2009 collection.

Raffaele was born in Germany to Italian parents. He has recently moved from Italy and is currently staying with his parents in Germany. He will re-locate to London permanently at the end of September.
